Job Summary:
The Desk Operations (DO) Graduate Assistant is a live-in position who works within a residential community to carry out Lake Michigan College's mission and guiding principles. The DO/PR Graduate Assistant's primary responsibility is to facilitate high quality desk operations through daytime customer service and nighttime security functions. Additionally, the RHO GA will oversee academic success initiatives within Beckwith Hall.
Essential Functions:
Student Staff and Resident Supervision/Mentorship
  • Directly train and supervise two desk operations teams (Front Desk Assistant and Evening Security Assistant) through monthly staff meetings, check-ins, and other activities as necessary
  • Promotes a high environment centered team centered on engagement and great customer service
  • Helps maintain accurate guest logs, underage guest approvals, and PNG database for Beckwith Hall
  • Manage front desk operational, training, and student development budget
  • Conduct performance evaluations of student staff once a month, focusing on growth and learning opportunities
  • Facilitate student staff accountability in performance of their role and provide appropriate responses to staff misconduct
  • Provides just-in-time training and on-going training for improved customer service with desk operations
  • Assist in facilitating student leader recruitment, staff selection, and training for coming school years and/or semesters
  • Support the Office of Residence Life in administrative matters regarding occupancy, mail, keys, and building access
  • Be a visible and active presence within Beckwith Hall and Lake Michigan College Community
  • Serve as resources to student staff and residence on community resources
  • Actively build and encourage relationships between persons of different identities and backgrounds.
  • Creates opportunities for team social and personal bonding to strengthen teamwork, cooperation, and service
  • Serves as a campus security authority and must report security issues to appropriate college personnel
  • Serves as liaison to Lake Michigan College security personnel and administrators as needed in relation to desk operations and security functions
  • Adjudicates low-level violations of Housing Handbook policies involving violations related to desk and security issues
  • Collaborate with Tutoring Office and Writing Center to expand and extend additional academic resources into Beckwith Hall
  • Establishes and maintains regularly scheduled office hours during day and night services
  • Meets with whole staff weekly and individually bi-weekly for any updates, questions, and concerns.
Administrative and Departmental Support
  • Assist with the openings and transitioning of Beckwith Hall at the beginning and end of each term and other officially scheduled breaks
  • Provide Housing and Residence Life support in the recruitment and retention efforts of other offices on-campus as needed and not limited to - primarily Admissions, Orientation, and Advising
  • Communicate clearly (verbal and written) and fairly with all members of the community in a timely and appropriate manner to foster a sense of community, ownership, and respect
  • Assist the facilities team in reporting and investigating building and suite maintenance needs as they arise
  • Handle sensitive information appropriately and with compassion, while also following all FERPA guidelines and student privacy rights
  • Support department administration as needed, not limited to the following areas - room selection process, room inspections, roommate matching, etc
  • Manage, track, and order supplies need for front desk and security operations
  • Works with Marketing to ensure that we are branding Beckwith Hall in a fun, professional manner.
Training, Meetings and On-Call Responsibilities
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Student Code of Conduct and Housing Handbook to effectively support student staff and residents in creating a safe, healthy, and vibrant community
  • Attend and fully participate in staff meetings, training sessions, in-service programs, and campus committees
  • Participate in Administrator On-Duty Rotation as scheduled - including Fall/Spring semester, and breaks as needed
  • Respond to incidents and emergencies as directed by established protocols or as directed by Supervisor or other college personnel

Job Specifications:
Preference for full or part-time masters student in a Student Affairs, Student Personnel, or College Counseling track. Other academic programs will be considered based on undergraduate experience. Previous experience in campus life involvement which could include Student Activities, Orientation, Housing and Residence Life, student clubs or organizations, recreation programs, or Athletics
